Drinking-quality,

taken for granted?

Drinking-quality water: should you care for it?

Well, if you think a moment you will find that you take a definite position on water quality, without even thinking. Here is why.

You either:

  • Consume water from the tap, or
  • Drink only bottled water, or
  • Drink water from a filter installed on the kitchen faucet

Which of the above is your answer? If you did not give a thought on this problem, you should better think of it.

The main worry of those in charge of treating and distributing drinking water or potable water to the community is to get it safe, free from any risk of harming human health.

In the context of municipal water, that is the meaning of quality:
not to harm. It could be excellent, it could be lousy, they won't care, provided it is safe, that is, that it meets the minimum requirements
whenever tested.

Sometimes they don't succeed, but the temporary failure does not translate in mass poisoning. Only the periodic controls will register some minor discrepancies concerning one or more counts in the very detailed protocols establishing drinking water quality.

Therefore one can read periodical reports affirming that certain community water systems have violated key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act at certain times over the previous five years.

But nobody seems to take these mishaps seriously, as it is known that enforcement of Drinking-quality water standards is weak, especially for relatively small water systems.

It is probably a waste of huge proportions, to produce and distribute all of the water of drinking quality, even though only a very small part of it is actually consumed or used in food preparation.

That is why less fortunate regions with limited water resources may need to introduce systems for Water Recycling for non potable use.

Getting safe Drinking-quality water is not trivial at all, because in certain parts of the world large human populations do not enjoy easy access to safe water.

Providing safe Drinking-quality water to those lacking it, is becoming, therefore, one of the main challenges for international politics and organizations.

You are probably not at risk, but nevertheless you, as the consumer, should be concerned about the water you drink, if not for yourself at least for babies and children or old people in the household.

Why not bottled water? Because its Drinking-quality is at best undistinguishable from tap water, and it is varying widely from suppler to supplier and from time to time.

Furthermore it is a burden on the family budget and it poses a mighty challenge to the environment, both for distribution and for disposal of empty containers.

Even if you cannot challenge the municipal system to improve the Drinking-quality of the water they supply, you can enjoy better health for your loved ones by taking the simple measure of installing an effective water filter at the kitchen faucet.

That will provide a better tasting water, and will take care of unavoidable temporary failures of the system. As you know, the harmful effects of marginally safe water are not immediate, they become dangerous in time, through accumulation in the body of tiny quantities of contaminants.

May I suggest that you consider one of the best filters available, for all the Drinking-quality water you need?
