This page on Water-purification has been rewritten anew to provide more benefits to the readers. It used to propose online Resources dealing with methods and procedures for treating polluted water to make it safe for human consumption.

Then, as it appeared that only a few of the readers would browse through the many pages to extract the most important information, I was encouraged to publish here only a readable summary of the subject.

Contrary to what one would like to believe, most of the water we are offered to drink does not come from pure wells hidden in the deep of pristine forests.

It comes, unfortunately, from water bodies, collected from many sources, part on surface (rivers, lakes) part from groundwater (underground aquifers), where, let alone drinking therefrom, we might be reluctant to dip the tip of our big toe.

Of course that is only the raw material undergoing the long and complex series of processes of Water-purification after which safe (if distasteful) drinking water is released to municipal distribution grids.

These processes are carried out in Water-purification plants. Their sizes depend on the population to be served and on the quality of available water to be treated.

Pumping, screening and storing are the first activities of any plant.
Then a few pre-treatments may be performed as needed, like pre-conditioning to remove excess salts and pre-chlorination to minimize the growth of fouling organisms.

After that we may find alkalinity adjustment to promote coagulation and flocculation to clarify water, sedimentation and filtration, for removing sand and suspended particles.

Disinfection is performed next, by using suitably fine filters and by adding chlorine to kill any pathogens that may pass through.

Other Water-purification methods may be used in special cases. Consumers may be requested to boil their purified water before usage to kill micro-organisms in case of temporary real or suspected contamination.

Distillation or reverse osmosis are among the processes used to implement desalination of seawater.

Each one of the required Water-purification stages has to be thoughtfully planned and the equipment must be at any time in good service condition to be effective.

Constant maintenance is required to make up for corrosion processes that may damage or destroy all metallic parts in or near the water stream, to verify the proper functioning and replacement of filters, of pumps, of piping, of valves etc.

The quality of the treated water is constantly verified by the plants because they are committed to keep it within the limits required by law.

Nevertheless the yearly controls performed by Authorities in charge of keeping the systems honest, find frequently minor deviations that may not be critical but point to certain problems that it is quite difficult to eradicate.

What do we learn from this? That although most municipal Water-purification plants are doing their best for supplying acceptable water to their consumers, water quality is not constant and at top level at all times.

It is generally considered safe for healthy adults but it may be problematic for young, developing or old and weak population. However the bad taste given by disinfection treatments makes it inferior to other bottled drinks.

These, although strongly advertised, may be unhealthy because of sugar content, and unsafe as stored in plastic bottles, not to mention high cost and logistic problems.

Therefore, additional home filtering systems are recommended also by official sources. Such home treated water has all the virtues of being safer and tastier, together with the convenience of continuous delivery and of low cost.
